Digital etching is a process I have invented to produce the quality of a hand pulled etching using today's digital technologies. Traditional etching use a copper or zinc plate coated in asphaltum and a needle to scratch in the line. The plate is then left in a vat of acid to etch the metal where the asphaltum has been scratched away. Then the plate is cleaned, and ink rolled over surface. The ink is then rubbed away from the surface with cheesecloth leaving the etched lines filled. Then wet paper is laid on the plate and run through an etching press to produce the image. Here I have programed the stylus with two tools to create the drypoint line and fill the line with ink. Instead of asphaltum or shelac to mask out the plate, I use layer masks and lasso selections on the computer. The limited editions are then printed on paper and that is run through an etching press with a blank plate to create the embossed look of an etching. The open editions here are printed on paper without the embossing. This new process is environmentally friendly without the need for petroleum products and harsh acids traditionally used. It is still labor intensive however as each line must be drawn twice on the computer to create the velvety look of a hand pulled etching.
